The CareerOneStop "Certification Finder" tool can help you identify the certifications you need for your occupation. Examinations test or enhance your knowledge, experience or skills in an occupation or profession. Employers value and seek employees with applicable certifications.

Certifications are another type of credentialing commonly preferred by employers and employees alike. For employers, certifications provide evidence of your continued learning, demonstrate a level of experience, knowledge or skills and are validated by third-party entities that have a solid understanding of the occupational field. Certifications are primarily earned from an educational institution or professional society. Certifications are valuable for you since they validate that you are knowledgeable and committed, and that you maintain current skills, knowledge or abilities. Certifications must be renewed periodically and associated educational components are often tied to the issuance or renewal process. 

For military spouses, certifications have the additional benefit of having a common national definition and are not state or government regulated as is the case with licenses. Technically, certification and licensure differ only in terms of legal status, but there may be very similar or even the same assessment processes for licensure. In some cases, the certification assessment process can be more comprehensive than that of licensure.
