Most military installations offer and appropriated employment positions. First, you should understand the difference between fund and appropriated fund positions so you can decide on a government career path.
Nonappropriated Fund Positions
The NAF positions are government positions funded through self-generated revenue from military exchanges and business activities such as clubs, bowling centers or golf courses in each service. These positions are highly portable and have lots of room for growth.
Each military service has their own employment websites related to NAF opportunities:
- Army/Air Force Exchange opportunities
- Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation positions
- Air Force NAF positions
- Navy Civilian Human Resources
- Navy Exchange Opportunities
- Navy Morale, Welfare, and Recreation positions
- Marine Corps Community Services positions
You can also visit MilitaryINSTALLATIONS for local information on NAF employment. Select 'Nonappropriated Funds (NAF) Human Resources' under the 'Select a program or service' drop-down menu and your installation or postal code to find a point of contact near you.
Appropriated Fund Positions
Civil service or appropriated positions are government positions funded by Congress and apply to a wide variety of career fields such as human services, education training, public affairs, office administration, contract administration and procurement, skilled labor, engineering and intelligence. These careers are also highly portable. Appropriated vacancies are located on USAJOBS. The Army Civilian Service portal is an additional Army resource dedicated to Army-specific civil service openings.
The NAF and AF positions are often in high demand and may be limited in availability. Your military spouse hiring preference might give you an advantage over an equally qualified candidate during the hiring process. NAF and AF employers have strong employment continuity programs. They are committed to recruiting, hiring, promoting and retaining qualified military spouses as they relocate to new duty stations.
