Being prepared for your interview can make the difference between landing the position and walking away without a job. In today's competitive job market, you must differentiate yourself from other candidates. Practice answering common interview questions during a video mock interview with a SECO career coach who can offer feedback on your responses and body language. Gain confidence by knowing the proper steps to take before, during and after your interview.
Interviews give a hiring manager the chance to determine if you are a good fit for the position and the organization. It is also a chance for you to decide if the job and the company are a good match for you. A number of different types of interviews are possible, including the phone or screening interview, face-to-face interview, group interview, full-day interview, behavioral interview, panel interview and follow-up interview. Try to find out what type of interview you can expect so you will feel comfortable with the situation.
Every interview is unique, but here are a few steps to follow:
- Greet the interviewer.
- Offer additional copies of your resume if there are multiple interviewers. Have work samples, reference lists and other materials ready in case you need them.
- Answer questions honestly, clearly, professionally and succinctly.
- Ask questions about the job and the company.
- Leave on a good note. Thank the interviewer, communicate your interest and discuss next steps.
- Send a thank-you note.
