Completing Your LinkedIn Profile

In addition to your resume, LinkedIn is one of the most popular items that hiring managers use to review potential job candidates. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is complete so that a hiring manager will notice you.

Your resume can be used as a starting point for completing your LinkedIn profile. Just like your resume, LinkedIn is divided into sections. The more complete your LinkedIn profile is, the better the chance a hiring manager may notice you. Follow these tips on completing your LinkedIn profile:

  • Profile picture — Use a professional-looking headshot.
  • Location and industry — Enter your location and select your desired industry from the list of choices.
  • Headline — This section defaults to your current position. You can edit this section to reflect the type of job you are looking for.
  • Header —Use this new feature from LinkedIn to grab an employer’s attention.
  • Summary — Use this section to tell a hiring manager who you are, what you’ve accomplished and why he or she needs to hire you. Just like with your resume, use as many keywords as possible throughout your LinkedIn summary section to stand out from the competition.
  • Experience — Enter each position separately within this section. Your titles and dates of employment should match the information on your resume. Use strong action verbs, detailed accomplishment statements and industry keywords throughout this section on your LinkedIn profile just like you use on your resume.
  • Organizations and volunteering — Use these sections to list any organizations that you volunteer for or are a member of. If you have a short work history or gaps in your paid work experience because of military moves, these sections will help to fill in your paid work experience gaps.
  • Education — The most important pieces of this section to complete are the name of your school and the degree information. You can also include any relevant activities you participated in or classes you finished.
  • Certifications — Complete this section if you have additional training or certifications.
  • Honors and awards — Add any honors and awards you want to highlight.
  • Publications — Include links to published work if you have any.
  • Projects — Use this section to highlight projects you played a large role in. If you have paid work experience gaps but worked on volunteer projects, this is another section that will help address those gaps.
  • Skills — Select at least 15 relevant skills to include in this section.
  • Contact information — Make sure your contact information is correct.

You want your completed LinkedIn profile to complement your resume. Use your LinkedIn profile to cross check each section on your resume to ensure you did not miss any information. The more complete your LinkedIn profile is, the more likely your LinkedIn profile will show up in recruiter searches.

Remember to update your LinkedIn profile at least once a year to make sure it’s both complete and contains updated information on the experiences and skills you gain each year.
