Shawn Martinbrough

Shawn Martinbrough is the author of “How to Draw Noir Comics: The Art and Technique of Visual Storytelling,” published by Random House and reprinted in several languages. Shawn is a native New Yorker and an alum of both the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts and The School of Visual Arts.

He is a critically acclaimed creator/artist whose DC Comics, Marvel and Dark Horse Comics projects include, “Batman: Detective Comics,” “Luke Cage Noir,” “Captain America,” “The Black Panther” and “Hellboy: Secret Nature.”

Shawn has co-created characters featured in the blockbuster feature film, “Deadpool,” the animated “Batman: Gotham Knights,” the FOX television series “GOTHAM,” “The GIFTED” and the “JUSTICE LEAGUE” feature film.

Shawn is the artist of “Thief of Thieves,” published by Skybound/Image Comics. The acclaimed graphic novel crime series is written by Robert Kirkman, creator of the AMC television series, “The Walking Dead” and award-winning author Andy Diggle.

Shawn’s work has been covered by BBC World America, ABC, NBC News, The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, The Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly, BET, Essence, Ebony, The New York Daily News, USA Today, AOL, Publisher’s Weekly, SIRIUS/XM Radio and others.

Shawn has been a featured guest and panelist at comic conventions in San Diego, New York, Washington, D.C., Paris, São Paulo and Rome.

As an artist, Shawn has given lectures on his career at the Pentagon, TEDx Mid Atlantic, The Society of Illustrators, Fiorello H. Joel Machak has worked with some of the country’s most successful advertising agencies, working on many well-known national brands, creating campaigns across every channel. His creative energy and big-brand thinking drives the creative product at Crosby to new heights. Beyond a fresh perspective, Joel has a creative philosophy that puts client success and seamless brand integration first. Early in his career, he co-created the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Crash Test Dummy campaign, one of America’s most successful PSA programs ever. He’s also done great work for clients, such as McDonald’s, Hallmark Cards, Whirlpool, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program, winning many of the industry’s highest awards along the way.

Ray Milano currently serves as the Deputy Associate Administrator for the Office of Veterans Business Development, or OVBD.

In his role as Deputy Associate Administrator, Ray assists the OVBD team in formulation, implementation and administration of policies and programs that equip veterans, service members (active duty, National Guard, reserve), and military spouses with mentoring, training, access to capital, and contracting opportunities.

Previous to his current post, Ray was the Director of the Veterans Business Outreach Center Program. As VBOC Director, Ray managed a network of 20 Veterans Business Outreach Centers, located throughout the U.S., which provide entrepreneurial training, counseling and mentoring to veterans and their family members.

Ray is a graduate of Northeastern University School of Law and a United States Marine Corps veteran.

Kelly Smith serves as a program analyst in the Non-medical Counseling Program directorate within the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy. She serves on the Administration and Communications team for the Military OneSource and Military and Family Life Counseling programs, where she is responsible for program communications and outreach activities.

Prior to joining the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Kelly served as a Family Advocacy Program Manager at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Virginia. In this role, she was responsible for the administration and execution of the installation’s domestic violence and child abuse prevention program. Her other assignments with the government include licensed clinical social worker for the U.S. Marine Corps. After spending nearly a decade working in family violence prevention, Kelly continues to have a passion for the study of vulnerability and trauma in the military community.

Ms. Smith is the proud daughter of a retired Airman and sister of a Marine.

Dan Savage

Dan Savage serves as the Head of LinkedIn’s veterans program, responsible for identifying and leveraging opportunities to use LinkedIn’s platform and resources to advance the employment situation of America’s veterans. Prior to joining LinkedIn, Dan spent four years at the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University serving in numerous roles: managing day-to-day operations as its first Chief of Staff; leading a national study of veteran-serving nonprofit organizations with the George W. Bush Institute; and launching its Onward To Opportunity program nationwide alongside the Department of Defense and the Schultz Family Foundation. Dan is a former infantry officer of the U.S. Army’s 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, a veteran of the war in Iraq, and a graduate of both the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Mark Williams

Mark Williams joined the Office of Veterans Business Development (OVBD) in March 2016, and serves as program manager of the Boots to Business program, an entrepreneurial development program for transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses.

In 2017 he participated in SBA disaster assistance efforts following Hurricanes Irma and Maria, deploying to Georgia, Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands as a public affairs specialist.

Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Williams served as a Lender Relations Specialist at the SBA’s Baltimore District Office, marketing the agency’s lending programs and services to banks and credit unions, as well as recruiting new lenders to participate in SBA loan programs. During his time at the Baltimore District Office, Mr. Williams also was a Veterans Business Development Officer, providing counseling, mentoring and referrals to current and future veteran small business owners.

Prior to entering government civilian service, Mr. Williams was the Vice President of Marketing at Integrated Systems Research (ISR) Corporation, a manufacturer of GPS tracking hardware and software systems.

Mr. Williams is a retired U.S. Marine. His diverse career included assignments as an aviation maintenance technician, combat correspondent, recruiter and military broadcaster. His last assignment was as a broadcast instructor at the Defense Information School at Fort Meade, where he was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He retired as a Gunnery Sergeant in 2000.

He has five children, and lives in Crofton, MD.

Kim D. Myers serves as a program analyst in the Office of Financial Readiness within the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Readiness. She is the program lead for strategic communications, where she is responsible for overseeing the creation and execution of financial education communications products and outreach activities.

Kim has worked with the military community for more than 15 years. Prior to joining the Office of the Secretary of Defense, she worked in family programs for the Air Force in both CONUS and OCONUS locations. Throughout her career, she has responded to the evolving needs of military families, and implemented programs and services to equip service members and their families with information and resources to enhance their quality of life. Mrs. Myers also brings a breadth of experience in understanding the military lifecycle as a spouse of a retired Air Force member.

Janel Cloutier
Program Analyst

Janel C. Cloutier is a program analyst for the Office of Veterans Business Development, Veteran Business Outreach Center. As the Military Spouse Program Representative, she connects with relevant stakeholders across public, private and military communities to identify challenges and opportunities for Women Veteran and Military Spouse business owners.

Additionally, Janel is the Grants Manager’s Technical Officer, or GOTR, and manages a multi-million dollar budget in grants and cooperative agreements for Veteran-related Entrepreneurial Training Programs. As the GOTR, she reviews federal grant applications and determines proposals program compliance and assures compliance with existing and proposed programs, policies and procedures through interface with other divisions and outside agencies.

Moreover, Janel participates on grant management work groups and teams involving cross-cutting initiatives and activities, to include: notice of awards and updated procedures. She analyzes and provides recommendations on business process improvement efforts, including process development, workload and workflow analysis, quality review and evaluating performance of processes against standards and executes long and short term plans for current and future programs and services.

Janel is a retired Air Force Veteran where she served as senior noncommissioned officer and performed the duties of information management and a senior paralegal and law office manager. Janel was stationed at Andrews AFB MD, MacDill AFB FL, Grand Forks AFB ND and various places within the National Capital Region. Upon retirement, she also served as the Deputy Law Office Manager for the Secretary of Defense’s Office of General Counsel for Personnel and Health Policy. Janel holds associate degrees in Information Management and Paralegal Studies and a baccalaureate in Paralegal Studies with a minor in Employment Law. Currently, she attends the Jack Welch Management Institute and is an honor student in the Executive MBA program. Janel is married to Donald Cloutier from Saco ME, also a retired Air Force Veteran, and has three daughters, Chantelle, Erika and Emily.

Sarah Rice

Sarah Rice is a professional bra fitter, and the owner of The Buxom Beauty in Honolulu, which is Oahu’s only bra shop that caters exclusively to women size D cup and larger. As the sole owner and employee of her store, Sarah handles all management, customer service, accounting, ordering, marketing and daily business activities. The store is open on weekday evenings by appointment and for walk-ins on Saturdays and Sundays.

While Sarah works 7 days a week to grow her business into a career, she has a full-time job in marketing and federal compliance at the University of Hawaii. She has over 8 years of experience in both private and corporate marketing experience, and 5 years of experience as a high school business teacher.

Sarah has a Bachelor’s degree in Business from University of Oregon, a Master’s in Education from Pacific University and a Master of Business Administration, or MBA, from Portland State University. She has been a military spouse for 12 years.

Bryan Joy

Bryan Joy recently founded Gfaith Media, a faith based tech and media company. Like many new entrepreneurs, he serves as Gfaith Media’s CEO, CFO, SVP of Sales, Product Manager and office administrator.

In his current role, Bryan works on new faith based mobile applications for both the Apple and Android platforms. He has worked hand-in-hand with regional SBA coaches, and other veteran friendly resources to get the company started.

After spending the past year setting up Gfaith Media, he has recent tips to help military spouses in the process of setting up a new company. He also has short cuts to help spouses navigate the necessary legal and capital raising steps in establishing any new company.

Previous to this new role, Bryan spent over 17 years in financial services. He spent his time building both regional and national sales teams at firms like Merrill Lynch, Equifax and TransUnion. He has been recognized as a “Presidents Club” level sales leader at four different national corporations.

Bryan is a graduate of The University of Georgia School of Business and a United States Marine Corps veteran. He is married to Camille, an active duty Lt. Col in the Air Force. They live near Tyndall AFB in Panama City, Florida with their two children, Max and Mia.

Kathia completed federal resume training with The Resume Place, Inc. and was certified as a federal career counselor and as a federal job search trainer. She has nine years of experience in education and career counseling and has been a part of the SECO program since October 2011. During her time with SECO, Kathia has received awards for excellence in delivering training materials and for continued dedication and commitment to process improvement initiatives. She has spent the past six years providing career and education coaching to military spouses worldwide.
