Kara Smith has worked for some of the country’s top remote work agencies where she has learned exactly what is needed to meet the demands of a shifting workforce to enable remote careers. She currently serves as the Director of Customer Operations for Instant Teams, which was formerly MadSkills, helping customers to connect and scale with some of the best talent the military spouse community has to offer. From the job search process to kickstarting a new remote team, Kara is deeply familiar with both sides of the remote environment. Utilizing her MBA in combination with a Master of Human Services Counseling, Kara has an uncanny ability to connect with spouses and businesses alike, understanding their pain points and growing them into power house remote teams. Most importantly, as a military spouse, Kara has the unique perspective to understand the desire for career growth in an environment that often seems impossible due to change. This is what truly created a fire in her to empower fellow spouses to set and achieve their career goals while still being able to support the military life.

Keri Hill has been with SECO for more than three years, with two years as a career coach. Keri graduated in 2003 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a master’s degree in community counseling. She has 15 years of experience in the counseling field and is a nationally certified counselor. Prior to working at SECO, Keri worked in postsecondary education; she also has experience working in the mental health and substance abuse fields. Keri is honored to have the opportunity to work with military spouses; each day she is inspired by the determination, commitment and courage exhibited by the military spouses with whom she interacts. Keri is committed to helping military spouses find their passion and support them throughout their career and education journeys.

Whitney Brock leads the Recruiting and Talent Acquisition efforts for Sawdey Solution Services, Inc., a women-owned small business and service-disabled veteran-owned small business headquartered in the Dayton, Ohio area. She has spent the majority of the past 10 years working in Human Resources supporting the Department of Defense industry. She is a graduate of Northern Kentucky University’s Organizational Leadership program and a graduate of the AIRS Recruiter Academy holding all eight certifications.

Gen Harrison-Doss
Sr. Program Manager, Military Affairs, Amazon, Inc.

Gen Harrison-Doss is a Senior Program Manager who works with military spouses to find meaningful employment and workforce development opportunities within Amazon. Gen believes that through collaboration, smart use of technology and innovation, military spouse employment challenges can be overcome. Gen began her career in talent acquisition 14 years ago and has been with Amazon since 2012. She first worked in Amazon's Seattle headquarters before moving to Texas in 2015 when her husband PCSed there. She's been working remotely ever since.

Before joining the Global Military Affairs team leading the military spouse program, Gen built and led the World Wide Operations Field HR Recruiting team for six years and through their largest times of growth, where the North American Customer Fulfillment network doubled in size twice. Gen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Arizona State University, is pursuing her Masters of Legal Studies also from Arizona State University, a Professional of Human Resources certificate from Seattle Pacific University and a Project Management certificate from Cornell University.

Gen's husband, Michael Doss, is an active-duty Senior Non-Commissioned Officer who has served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 17 years and is currently a First Sergeant at Dyess Air Force Base. They are parents to their two-year-old son, Harrison James Doss and three King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, named Memphis, Raleigh and Selma.

Sarah Roberts

Sarah joins LinkedIn as Senior Veterans Program Manager. Prior to joining LinkedIn, Sarah led the Talent Acquisition and Operations strategy for Nordstrom retail. Sarah served in a variety of roles supporting the veteran community in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors. She led efforts focused on community building at Team Red, White, and Blue, a national veteran service organization, where she served as the Northwest Regional Director. In her role, Sarah spearheaded business development efforts, designed and executed leadership development programs, and led over 40 community leaders in their mission to “Enrich veterans lives through physical and social activity.” She built Talent Acquisition and Diversity programs in the tech industry for both Amazon and Microsoft where she led teams focused on recruiting, employment branding, and program management to support the veteran community. Sarah is passionate about service and efforts to support social impact across the communities she supports.

Mininia Hawkins is a Program Analyst in Military Community Support Programs within the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy. She manages the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program with specific emphasis on career readiness and spouse employment, and oversees the Military Spouse Employment Partnership. She also coordinates events and develops awareness by educating military spouses and other stakeholders of the SECO program.

Mrs. Hawkins entered the federal government as a Presidential Management Fellow and previously worked in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Policy), Washington Headquarters Service, and other DoD offices.

Mrs. Hawkins is the wife of a retired Airman and they have two daughters.

PRESENTER

Herrick Ross
Senior Talent Advisor, Starbucks Coffee Company

Herrick Ross serves as a senior talent advisor for the Starbucks Coffee Company on the Global Talent Acquisition Social Impact Team. He is one of three leads for veteran and military spouse employment, refugee employment, people with disabilities employment, and Opportunity Youth employment and advocacy across the country. Originally from Guyana, South America, Herrick joined the Marine Corps in 1993. He served 22 years in uniform, which culminated a career that entailed numerous deployments to Africa, Asia and the Middle East. He was also a key pioneer who championed equal opportunity endeavors undertaken by the Marine Corps, which entailed opening combat arms roles to women, LGBTQ rights in the military and diversity management. He retired from the Marines to provide his extensive knowledge of military policy writing and research to Starbucks as a military talent recruiter in 2015. Herrick is passionate about selfless service and volunteers his time furthering right citizenship and equality wherever he can. He has received numerous accolades and decorations including the Blacks in Government Award, Military Meritorious Service Award from former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates for creating a diversity management program that is still in use throughout the Marine Corps. He is an MBA graduate of Liberty University and is currently pursuing his Phd in Business Management.

Denise Aube has more than 30 years of experience in planning and implementing award-winning communications and brand development programs. She began her career in Manhattan working for some of the most well-known agencies and her experience spans a variety of brands and organizations from Volvo, Sheraton International and Ralston Purina, to Kaiser Permanente, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Military OneSource. As a lead strategist at Crosby, she is responsible for the creation of research-based brand building programs that are authentic, drive business and inspire actions that matter. As the leader of Crosby’s healthcare practice, her expertise spans the full continuum of care from prevention and wellness to primary care, tertiary care, clinical and health services research, chronic care management and long-term care/aging services. She is an active member of the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development and accredited by the Academy for Healthcare Management and the Public Relations Society of America.
